Who We Are

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Regional Network – Midwest is a new science and technology ecosystem comprised of universities, large and small businesses, other government agencies, and venture capitalists. The Midwest Network supports the AFRL by cultivating strategic collaborations to drive innovative research, translation, and workforce development opportunities that bolster the critical technology needs of the U.S. Air Force (USAF). The Midwest Network encompasses 12 states and is headquartered at Purdue University.

Our Mission

The AFRL Regional Network – Midwest integrates diverse stakeholders to create a culture of mission-driven, vertically cohesive innovation by:

  • Fostering dynamic research teams in critical domains such as hypersonics, microelectronics, energetic materials, space domain awareness, and in-space servicing and manufacturing
  • Identifying AFRL scientists and engineers to work side-by-side with researchers from partner institutions
  • Leveraging unique, state-of-the-art facilities across the ecosystem
  • Connecting with and elevating regional-specific resources, programs, and initiatives
  • Facilitating information exchange across the Midwest Network through a robust, online communication infrastructure that includes a community portal for all members

The AFRL Regional Network – Midwest facilitates collaborative research that aims to transition cutting-edge technologies from the laboratory bench to the military and commercial markets through:

  • Identifying and addressing key risk areas for the USAF and the commercial industry
  • Educating partners about USAF needs, providing access to research facilities, and increasing awareness of the ecosystem’s workforce
  • Providing funding opportunities to teams engaged in collaborative research efforts with AFRL scientists and engineers
  • Analyzing the impacts of innovation and commercialization on the commercial and defense sectors
  • Collaborating with leaders in the field of innovation science to develop new frameworks and understandings that enhance creative output

Our Vision

Workforce Development & Education

The AFRL Regional Network – Midwest will cultivate and grow the technical and business workforce by:

  • Educating university partners about how they can tailor their curriculum to address USAF future technology requirements
  • Guiding partners through the government contracting and funding infrastructure to increase engagement and facilitate connections
  • Advertising internships, workforce development experiences, and career prospects within the AFRL and the greater DoD ecosystem
  • Establishing strategic relationships with partner institutions to encourage pipeline activities and leverage existing initiatives for the AFRL
  • Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the regional S&T ecosystem

Air Force Research Laboratory’s Regional Network – Midwest is hosted by Purdue University. Through this network, Purdue is helping to revolutionize aerospace development and defense technologies in the Midwest region by utilizing their research capabilities and resources from their top-ranked College of Engineering top tier faculty, and world-class research centers.
